Julie is a Senior Research Officer in the Department for Research in Assessment and Measurement, currently project leader on the year 7 English progress tests and optional tests for years 3, 4 and 5 and additionally working on the evaluation of pupil performance in the year 7 progress tests. She works on a wide range of key stage assessments as well as researching areas of linguistics related to children's writing.

Head of English in FE college prior to joining NFER in 2000 to work on a linguistic project evaluating differences in the writing of boys and girls at Key Stage 2.
