Juliet Sizmur is a Senior Research Officer in the Department for Research in Assessment and Measurement with a long experience in educational research. She is a member of AAIA and the Oxfordshire Assessment for Learning Network.

Over many years Juliet has worked across most NFER departments, on an extensive range of research projects from curriculum and policy issues to specialised test development. She has sound experience in a wide range of research methodologies and analyses techniques relating to national surveys, evaluation studies, technical pilots and error analyses at various levels, as well as a number of more specific qualitative projects.

For the Department for Research in Assessment and Measurement, since 1990, she has been involved mainly in literacy research, in the consultation, development, trialling, standardisation, standard setting and evaluation of a wide variety of tests for key stages 1 and 2. These include statutory and optional English assessments and mark schemes from years 2 to 7. Since 1998 Juliet has been involved in all aspects of the development, trialling and level setting of the KS2 English tests and tasks for Wales (ACCAC) and, more recently has been part of the team developing optional materials to support teacher assessment in English at key stage 2.

Other areas of work have included the production of English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning items for a variety of selection and standardised tests, the revision and re-standardisation of the British Picture Vocabulary Scale and other co-operative projects with NFER-Nelson.

More recently Juliet’s interest has been strongly focused on Assessment for Learning and its development in schools. This has included the production of a set of classroom materials designed to promote AfL principles through literacy, as well as large scale surveys on the use of assessment data in schools and some detailed focus group and case study work. Additional areas of interest include the exploration of new technologies and their application to testing, particularly e-assessment, and the teaching and assessing of thinking skills in schools.
