Marian leads the Foundation’s large-scale and longitudinal research and evaluation projects, covering a wide range of topics and policy areas with children, young people and learners of all ages. A specialist in evaluation, literacy education and assessment, she is currently Reading Co-ordinator of the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), consultant to a literacy charity in the developing world and director of a project evaluating an alcohol education programme for teenagers. In 2008 she was awarded a Fellowship of the Association for Educational Assessment – Europe.

Marian’s long research career has encompassed many years of involvement in the development of tests and informal assessments for national use, research into formative e-assessment, a series of surveys of children’s attitudes to reading and evaluations of summer literacy schools and the national literacy project. She moved into educational research after 14 years as a teacher in primary and special schools in London.
