Assessment development: types of assessment
Selection
Tests are used for selection purposes in both the educational and occupational (work-place) sectors. Some secondary selection tests (also known as 11+ tests) used in schools are developed by the Department for Research in Assessment and Measurement, although the Department has no involvement in public examinations such as GCSEs and A Levels that may also be used for selection purposes. The remainder of this section is concerned with occupational selection.
Tests are widely used by organisations to identify the strengths and weaknesses of applicants when selecting new members of staff. Careers advisors and recruitment consultants may use test results to advise people about jobs that could be suitable for them, and tests can also be used as part of promotion procedures for existing staff.
