This guide is intended to provide information about the approaches local authorities
have taken to gathering information about aspects of the life of children and
young people that contribute to their well-being. In particular, it focuses on
the various survey instruments being used to elicit children and young people's
views directly (the 'pupil voice'). These range from surveys of perceptions and
experiences of quite specific aspects of the life of children and young people,
such as school meals, to surveys relating to all five outcomes in Every Child
Matters (ECM). Some of these have been developed within authorities and others
are available from outside providers. The guide also records some examples of
local authority consultation with children and young people over their
priorities related to the ECM outcomes. Click here to view online guide
