There are two main ways to find information on the NFER website: browsing the site with menus and navigation bars; searching
browsing NFER website simplifies the browsing process by having three different levels of navigation. The main navigation bar - coloured tabs - represent the largest sections on the website, each of which has its corresponding sub-navigation (sub-menu). For example the About NFER tab, when selected, will display the About NFER page, as well as the About NFER sub-menu.
To access some of the utility pages, the NFER Utility menu can be used. Some examples of utility pages are advanced search page, site index page, contact us page, help page, etc. In addition, users can see if they have anything in their shopping cart, or simply access the NFER
shop. The Utility menu is always displayed on the top right corner of every NFER web page.
searching There are two different search types offered on NFER website. The quick search, a box that is displayed on every page and the advanced search (accessible from utilities menu, see above).
The quick search function searches all pages on the site, including their content and page titles. The advanced search, on the other hand, allows users to specify individual search fields, such as title, document, author, date range, document type etc.

Most of the documents on the NFER website are free to download and read. We are trying to keep the document formats consistent, so that the users do not have to use different types of software. The most popular document format on the NFER website is Adobe PDF, usually repesented by this
icon. To read PDF documents, Adobe Acrobat Reader is required. If your computer does not come with this software, it can be downloaded free from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
Occasionally, downloadable documents can be in Microsoft Word format
. These usually do not require any additional software, and can be read straight through the browser.
If you experience problems downloading a particular document when you click on the icon, try clicking with the right mouse button and then selecting the Save as option from the menu.
Many reports are not available from the NFER website but from our sponsors' websites. These are indicated by the link opening in a new window and accompanying text such as 'Download from DfES website'.
